Needle lace is a technique made with a simple needle and thread that dates back to the 15th century — if you can imagine hand embroidery that exists without a backing material or fabric, that’s basically what it is. It’s a way of hand-making lace that is incredibly time consuming, with practitioners creating thousands of tiny stitches, but produces beautiful pieces that still has that traditionally lacy feel. Since teaching myself the technique by reading old patterns and studying works from history in 2022 or so, I’ve created several works in the media. Here’s a few examples.
